Description:
Learn the magic of a moebius scarf! This intriguing
scarf is worked from the center out. It can
be worn in several different ways, including
as a hood/headscarf. We will learn what a moebius
is, a quick and invisible cast-on, and some
variations for the bind-off. Students will start
a full-sized moebius in class, to be finished
at home.
Supplies
Yarn (see below); 47" or 40" circular
needle in a size that gives you a nice scarf
fabric (see Homework below); stitch marker.
Many types of yarn will work for this project;
choose something that you would like for a scarf.
Some suggestions follow, but feel free to bring
whatever yarn you would like to use. I would
suggest that you not use a fur or eyelash yarn
for your first moebius. Rowan's Kidsilk Haze
or K1C2's Douceur et Soie worked on a larger
needle in garter stitch makes an ethereal scarf
that is surprisingly warm. 25g is generally
enough for a moebius. A light colored, smooth,
worsted weight yarn with a size 8 or so needle
would make a nice scarf that would be easy to
work. About 100g is a good amount. A strand
of mohair held with a strand of a wool such
as Cascade 220 or Brown Sheep's Lamb's Pride
Worsted makes a cushy fabric worked on about
a size 13 needle. About 200 yds of each will
generally be enough for a moebius.
Homework:
Work a gauge swatch so that you know your gauge
(stitches per inch) when you get to class. Choose
either garter stitch (knit every row) or the
4x4 Basket weave stitch that follows. (The stitch
pattern that you choose will be the one that
you use for your moebius. Choose a needle size
that gives you a nice scarf fabric – not too
stiff.)
Basket weave stitch (multiple of 8 sts)
Rows 1-4: (K4, p4) across.
Rows 5-8: (P4, k4) across.
Repeat Rows 1-8 for Basket weave stitch
